Salicin is an active drug found naturally in White Willow Bark and extracted as a bitter white crystalline substance. It is a β-glycoside and is closely related to, and therefore acts in a similar way to Aspirin. Applications include anti-irritative activity and is used in Cosmetic and Topical dermatological preparations. It can also be used for Microbiology Applications where it can be used to identify bacteria based on their ability to ferment certain carbohydrates.
