Esculin Hydrate

Esculin is a coumarin; a naturally product found in the bark of for example, the Horse Chestnut Tree with various applications. In Microbiology, when added to Bile Salts with Ferric Citrate, a dark brown colour indciates a positive test for various Bacterium; notably Enterococcus and Aerococcus spp. Esculin is also a flourescent dye, changing from colourless at pH 1.5 to flourescent blue at pH 2.
